Uncontested Divorce vs. Contested Divorce
While some people automatically associate divorce with an expensive courtroom battle, many divorces are uncontested. This means that divorcing spouses are able to work out their issues without resorting to a trial in court.
Even if you and your spouse have certain matters upon which you have difficulty agreeing, you may be able to get a divorce without going to court.
Conversely, when spouses cannot agree about the terms and conditions of their divorce, they sometimes end up in court where a judge makes decisions for them. This is called a contested divorce, and hiring a lawyer is a good idea in this case.
Issues to resolve contested divorce
Any divorce, even an amicable one, can become contested if spouses cannot reach a settlement. This agreement must address every issue related to the legal end of a marriage, including:
- Spousal support
- Child support
- Child custody and visitation
- Division of property and assets
Velez Law understands how to approach these delicate matters in such a manner as to protect our clients’ interests and objectives. When you work with our firm, we place your needs first.
