Why Do Couples Divorce Later on in the Marriage?
Marriage may not always last forever, but when you think of married couples getting divorced, you may think of those who have not been married long.
However, even long-term couples can untie the knot at any time. In fact, the divorce rate for couples over the age of 50 has doubled since 1990. This shows that couples who have been together for two, three, or even four decades can still get divorced.
Divorce can happen for many reasons, but the main issue is that people are not happy with their married lives. After being together for so long, couples often feel as if there is nothing keeping them together anymore. And with people living longer these days, being together forever is a long time. Here are some possible reasons why a marriage may end after a couple has been together for decades.
Lack of Communication
This is a big issue in any relationship. When couples go for days without saying anything of any substance, the marriage can break down. Couples should be communicating every day about important things such as problems in the marriage, future goals, plans, and anything else worth noting. Ignoring each other is a recipe for disaster.
Financial Issues
Money problems can happen at any time. Financial stability does not automatically come when someone gets older. In fact, as a couple nears retirement, they may find out that there will not be as much money available as they thought. This means one or both spouses may have to keep working longer than expected, which can lead to arguments.
They Have Grown Apart
Keeping a marriage interesting is a lot of hard work. Couples may be busy early on in their marriages with work and child-bearing. Once they retire and the children move out, couples may experience empty nest syndrome. They may realize that they have nothing in common with their spouse anymore.
Infidelity
For some people, intimacy may becomes less important. However, both spouses may not be on the same page regarding this. If one person is not getting what they need out of the marriage, then they may look elsewhere.
Addiction
An addiction can suddenly appear after being together for many years. An addiction can be hard to battle, and this can endanger a long-term marriage.
